As you may know, there are 48 characters used to represent Japanese sounds. However, excluding “wi” (ゐ) and “we” (ゑ), which are no longer in use, only 46 characters are commonly used today. Similarly, there are around 30 types of what are called Jindai characters, which are said to have been used by gods appearing in Japanese mythology. Many of these types do not include all 48 characters.

However, the Ryutai characters, a type of Jindai characters, include all 48 characters without any omissions 🐉. It is believed that the Ryutai characters were established before any abbreviations or disappearances occurred, suggesting they originated in an older era than other Jindai characters.

The Secret Message Hidden in the Futomani Chart: The Seat Map of the Gods

The arrangement of 48 characters in a circle is called the “Futomani Chart.” The Futomani Chart, bestowed by the deity Toyouke-Ōmikami (Toyoke) upon the two deities Izanagi and Izanami, can be likened to a “seat map of the gods.” Each character in the circle is considered to represent a deity, symbolizing the presence of 48 gods.

The Futomani Chart is not merely a random collection of characters. Amaterasu-Ōmikami (Amaterasu), the child of Izanagi and Izanami, used the words “aifuhemowosushi” written in the third circle from the center and two-character combinations written in the fourth circle to compile 128 waka poems. These poems were then used for divination. This collection of waka poems is known as “Futomani,” one of the ancient texts written in the Hotuma script. The Futomani Chart played a crucial role as the foundation for these poems.

The Futomani Chart is believed to contain powerful energy. Its spirals and geometric patterns are said to hold the key to understanding the creation of the universe and the source of life. Historically, it has been used as a talisman and is thought to possess divine protection.

The Creative Power of Izanagi and Izanami: Left-Spiraling and Right-Spiraling Whorls

At the center of the Futomani Chart, left-spiraling and right-spiraling whorls are depicted. The diagram between them appears to symbolize the uterus and ovaries.

The left spiral represents “a,” the center “u,” and the right spiral “wa,” which together read as “auwa.” This is said to represent the beginning of the universe.

The left spiral is thought to symbolize Izanagi, the male deity representing expanding energy, while the right spiral symbolizes Izanami, the female deity representing contracting energy.

When something is born from nothing, expansion occurs first, followed by contraction, which forms matter. Everything in this world, from subatomic particles to the Earth and the Sun, was born from this energy of expansion and contraction.

The story of the birth of the world, known as “Kuniumi,” is depicted at the center of the Futomani Chart, representing the expanding energy of Izanagi and the contracting energy of Izanami.

The second circle inscribed in the Futomani Chart reads “Tohokamiwehitame.”

In the second innermost circle of the Futomani Chart, the characters “Tohokamiwehitame” are inscribed. This is a word from Shinto known as one of the “Three Types of Purification,” considered the highest form of purification words. It is known for its power to ward off evil and possesses strong, powerful energy.

The Meaning of the Eight-Pointed Star

Tracing the characters “Tohokamiwehitame” reveals an eight-pointed star. Geometric patterns, such as those found in the Egyptian pyramids, esoteric Buddhist mandalas, and Hindu mantras, are said to hold the meaning of gathering and enhancing energy.

Similarly, the eight-pointed star in the Futomani Chart is also believed to play a role in gathering energy and enhancing power.

The third circle from the center of the Futomani Chart reads “Aifuhe mowosushi.”

The string of characters “Aifuhe mowosushi” written in the third circle from the center of the Futomani Chart is known as the initials of the “Awa no Uta,” which also appears in the Kojiki. This song is recorded in the first chapter of the “Hotsumatsutae,” a document written in Hotsuma script 3,300 years ago, and is said to have been sung by the deities Izanagi and Izanami to pray for the restoration of the country’s order and a bountiful harvest.

During the reign of Izanagi and Izanami in Japan, the weather was unpredictable, rice cultivation suffered, and the country’s order was disturbed. In response, the two deities first decided to rectify the language of the people and aimed to restore order. They then created the “Awa no Uta” as a song to summon the blessings of heaven and earth.

The character “A” represents heaven or father, while “Wa” represents earth or mother. It is said that Izanagi sang the upper 24 sounds, while Izanami sang the lower 24 sounds, accompanied by an instrument called the Kadagaki, which is the prototype of the biwa. This song is not just a series of words but a sacred music that harmonizes heaven and earth.

The “Awa no Uta” is not only a song praying for a bountiful harvest but is also said to activate the organs, cells throughout the body, promoting both physical and mental health. Furthermore, as it consists of all 48 characters without repetition, it is believed to have been crafted to help people of that time remember and correctly pronounce all 48 sounds of the Japanese language.
